Come for the spices and other Indian ingredients - Stay for the take out counter - esp. the Chicken Biriyani!!!! Amazing!!! It's only $8, but you can get 2-3 meals out of the portion! The food is cooked to order, so it's best to call ahead if you are in a hurry. Secret surprise - the awesome samosas behind the counter.

This place is awesome! I had to try hard to walk past the colorful desserts behind the display case. There are so many spices that cover the needs for a Indian cooking newbie and the owner was very helpful. After he saw all the spices that I needed, he told me what I could make with them and offered to show me how to make them in his kitchen during the week. Too bad I had to leave for Virginia the next day... :( I lived in Ann Arbor for 5 years and am kicking myself for 1) not learning to cook Indian food sooner and 2) not discovering this place for their take outs.

Deeelicious takeout! And I'm no expert but I don't doubt its authenticity. But it's seriously just one guy in the back of a grocery store, so don't go if that bothers you!

The slogan on the building is "Sweets, Snacks and Imported Groceries," and that about sums up what's available at Foods of India. I debated whether to categorize it as a deli, since that's a little deceiving. It's mostly an ethnic grocery store with a small deli case that contains only Indian desserts. In addition to big bags of basmati rice and read-to-eat boxed meals, the store also has a small produce section. It consists of only about two dozen items, including onions and bitter melon, but all the produce looked good, not wilted or wrinkled like the produce at some other small ethnic groceries I've shopped in. The also sell a small selection of imported bath and body goods, including some heavenly-smelling soaps made with sandalwood oil.

Not reliable when putting in full orders. I would recommend Bombay Grocers on Platt & Packard Street instead

Get ready for my longest review to date: After Tony C. sent me his review, making me feel special and loved that someone thought of me, I made a mental note to check this out. I finally got around to it, and my emotions are mixed. First, I was super pumped by Tony's review. Then I got there, and was a little disappointed. The store section: Pretty much carries the necessities of Indian cooking; spices, rice, random selections of American based companies selling their stuff for an Indian market. Their produce section was small, but what they did have was fresh and cheap, including peppers, onions, coconut and mango. There is a $10 minimum to use your credit/debit card. The Kitchen of India (the "take-out/restaurant" part): I wish they would put a "wholly owned subsidiary of Foods of India" sign underneath the window, but that would be silly. Anyway, it's in the back of the store, with two tables, and a tiny "kitchen" that had four burners and what I think was a clay oven? It's pretty hole in the wall, but that makes for good food, right? The menu is small, but there's a little bit of everything for everyone if you like chicken or you're a vegetarian, and the prices are decent ($7-10). There were two guys working, the guy at the register was brand spankin' new (as in first day) and was overwhelmed by the three people ordering/picking up food. I had to help him with the credit card machine to charge me. The other guy was cooking all of the orders fresh to go- so he was trying to juggle making food and helping the newbie. Which made what I thought would be a quick pop in, order, shop, then get food to go a lot longer than I had hoped. It took awhile just to get my order, have me pay, and have the two people before me taken care of. Maybe when newbie gets it together, things will be a lot quicker. Point: call in your order, like half an hour before you want to pick it up. But here is what made everything ok: The food was delicious, so yummy! And the portions are huge! I got the veggie biryani and the chicken tikka, Andrew and I had dinner, and I think we have enough left over for at least another dinner. You never get that much at a sit down place. Ever. The naan was thick and cripsy, perfectly cooked. The raita? A little runny and bland, but you get a lot of it, so just use twice as much on your food. The tikka had some nice heat, and the mix of veggies in the biryani was impressive.

I stopped in to see what all the grocery carries and noticed the kitchen in the back. It's small and minimalist verging on "is this really a good idea". The chef was extremely gracious. When asked he politely asserted that if he didn't make the best Indian food in A2 it was the second best (to Shalimar, which is not a great value, but does have ambiance). The food was excellent, fresh, and a tremendous value. Perfect for take out, the food and unlikely location makes this a prototypical hidden gem.

Foods of India is Closed. It has plans to re-open as a full-scale restaurant, but for now, it has limited hours and trying to sell off everything left form the grocery store. Hope they open up soon I liked going there when I worked in that area.

got the spiciest version of lamb biriyani, and it was right on target :D biriyani is all about spices, try to get the spiciest version possible and eat with yoghurt salad dressing you get with it, it will be good. lamb biriyani is almost 11 bucks. But it's good for two people. The taste is so truly native. they also sell southern style lentil soup(SAMBAR) inside the refrigerator section, try that with some bread...

The kitchen in the back (Kitchen of Indian) is excellent for quick, cheap take-out Indian food. I'd rank the food quality at least as good as Shalimar, possibly better, and much better in flavor than Tastes of India/Raja Rani/Madras Masala. The secret to good Indian food is well-spiced gravies and this place has mastered them.

Best indian food in Ann Arbor. Yes better than, gasp, Shalimar. The biryani is probably my favorite. The curry is really good, too. Oh, and they will make the naan fresh to order. The portions are large; I'll usually have enough for two meals. The only down side is that you probably wouldn't want to eat-in. And no delivery.

the cook in the back is a bit standoffish but the food here is one of the best indian food i've had anywhere. it's like homestyle food, and he cooks it when you order it. it's awesome

Foods of India has a good selection of spices and snacks, but the real reason to go here is the takeout-restaurant inside. Prices are similar to "fancy" Indian restaurants ($8-9), but the food is SO much better here. Everything is freshly prepared and the naan is delicious. Don't keep this place a secret--give it a try and spread the word!

closest indian place, so i always went here... fat white guy, so they had all the indian snacks n sweets that i like to gorge myself with. laddu, muruku, fresh gulab jamun (extra fried/browned version is ghee-licious), other non-packaged sweets, papad, namkeens (good selection), naan, relishes, etc.... the guy there is really nice and would get the namkeen i like, but i really wouldn't be in there often enough to get it, so i would just stock up. for how small the place is, they got a good selection and good ratios of everything (produce to lentil to rice to media to frozen to jarred stuff, etc.) they also sell some prepared food, and i think their samosas n such sell well, but i never tried em... u got like two options so i would def check it out.

used to be cheaper with last owner, but the takeout indian food at the back of the store is awesome.
